Electric Guitar

What do I do when my 6 year old asks for an electric guitar for Christmas.  I think that is one of the funniest gift requests she has ever made.  I am amazed every day how individual all of my girls are.

California

I spent some time in Southern California this weekend visiting a friend.  It is a crazy place but I really liked it.  I loved that there were so many thing to do and see.  I drove into LA and looked at the LDS temple down there.  Amazing.  It is a huge building!!!  Very pretty.  I really didn't mind the traffic either.  Now I know that I was driving around on the weekend but it really wasn't bad at all.  That is all.

Cattle Call

Just getting ready to fly courtesy of Southwest Airlines.  I left early this morning before my two youngest were awake.  There is something very special about looking in on my sleeping girls.  Those tender moments are a gift.  I forget about all the crazy emotions and feel nothing but complete love for them.  Little moments like the one I had this morning are what life is all about.

Homework

It is a humbling experience when I cant figure out how to do my kids homework.  I don't know if any of you have this experience but some days my girls come to me and ask for help with their homework.  I will sit down and look at the problems and scratch my head because I cant figure out how the teacher wants it answered.  I know how I would do the problem but that isn't always what the teacher is looking for.  I remember that when Avery was in the second grade they changed the math teaching method.  The teachers had to attend a class to learn how to teach this new method.  Now maybe it is just me but if the teachers have to learn how to teach the "new and improved" method and they don't even get it, perhaps just perhaps it is a terrible method.  Just a thought.

Emotions

I am so lost when it comes to teenage girls!!!!  I really don't understand how I can say one thing or look at them and they start crying.  Now don't get me wrong.  I wouldn't trade places with women for all the money in the world.  I have seen your job and I don't want it.  I think women are amazing and wonderful but I don't get you at all!!!  My oldest is 12 and she will go from happy to sobbing in less than one second.  At times like this I just buckle up and hold on for the ride!!

Tired

Do you ever have those nights where you fall asleep and then like 5 or 10 minutes later wake up and your wide awake? Had one last night. Two lousy nights sleep in a row. I am always amazed by the human body. I really think that we as health professionals are quite clueless when it comes to the intricate workings of the body. I have given literally tens of thousands of shots. I get people numb with just one shot almost every time, but every now and again I get a patient who seems impervious to any attempt I make with a needle.  So if your dentist is having a hard time getting you numb be kind to him/her!

Here we go again.

Ok, so for those of you who dont know I am a dentist. I have been out of dental school for over six years now. I love being a dentist. As with any job there are many moments that make me want to tear my hair out by the fistful, there are many good times too. I recently opened a new office in my home town. It was a big decision that I didnt take lightly. I am very happy to be on my own now and be at the helm. Today I was contemplating the life as a dentist. I know many people out there think that we charge too much money. I completely agree that dentistry is expensive. The blame isnt entirely with the dentist though. It is insane how much it costs to just open the doors of a dental office. Supplies are outrageous and equipement is astronomically priced. For example, the other day I was looking for a light that would hook to my Loupes(magnification glasses). These lights are basically a flash light on your head. I went to the store and the most expensive flash lights cost maybe $35.00. The average price for one for a dentist that attaches to glasses is $1000.00 or more. FOR A FLASHLIGHT! I just dont get it. I seriously am considering starting a company to make lights and sell them for cheap. I would love to put some pressure on some of the supply companies to make them reduce prices.

I love my girls

Yesterday I had my 9 year old in my office to remove two teeth. She was very nervous even though we have taken teeth out on her before. I had my hygienist get her numb and we popped those teeth right out. She did great. I was very proud of her. All of my girls are so different and unique. Some days I feel like I am on an alien planet. Other days I feel right at home. I never dreamed I would be the father of three girls but I wouldn't change it for the word. A little about me. I am a dentist. I am 34 years old and married to the most amazing woman. We are doing the best we can to raise good, intelligent, responsible, loving girls. Because I am a dentist I am surrounded by women all day at work as well as all night at home. Hence the title of my blog Lone man in a sea of estrogen.
